The LVN-to-RN Career Mobility program prepares licensed LVNs to take the licensure exam in order to practice as a registered nurse. There are two tracks available: a year-long track or an eighteen-month track.
The program prepares entry-level nurses with the knowledge and skills needed to provide quality patient care. Students are taught the competencies of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and upon graduation will have earned an Associate in Science (AS) Degree and eligibility to take the RN National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Student learning in the RN program utilizes online learning in a portion of each course with the majority of the coursework being in-person.
The clinical laboratory experiences will occur in local hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, ambulatory care clinics, community settings and/or the SCC Simulation Lab. The SCC RN Program utilizes a very high percentage of clinical time in direct patient care settings as the cornerstone to learning the foundational practices in nursing care. The program includes clinical rotations in many specialties including: geriatrics, adult care, pediatric, obstetrics, psych-mental health and nursing leadership. Classroom learning includes some online learning with the majority of each course delivered with the in-person method.

The LVN-RN Transition to Registered Nursing Associate in Science (A.S.) degree may be obtained by completion of the required program, and either (a) the Local General Education Pattern or (b) the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC), plus sufficient electives for a total of at least 60 units. See SCC graduation requirements.
For all courses not taken at SCC check your classes on the RN Course Equivalency Chart to determine if courses taken at other colleges will count toward prerequisites.
If you don’t see your course from another institution on the RN Course Equivalency Chart, but believe it should be counted, do all of the following:
- Complete a Course Substitution Petition and be sure to give yourself at least two to three weeks for processing.
- Once your petition is approved, an Official Transcript will need to be submitted to the Admission & Records Office prior to the application deadline.
Students may choose to follow their catalog rights for prerequisites to the program, or they may choose to follow the prerequisites to the program listed at time of entry. If you plan to use catalog rights and meet eligibility with a SOC 300 or equivalent course you will need an "AA/AS General Education Requirements" form completed by a LRCCD counselor verifying your catalog year prior to 2025-2026. If you already have an "AA/AS General Education Requirements" form completed and it is missing the catalog year you will need to have a new form completed to upload into your 2025-2026 program application.
Exception
Students with the BA/BS or higher degree can waive the Ethnic/ multicultural Studies requirement at the time of entry.
Students who possess a bachelor's (BA/BS) or higher degree from a college or university accredited through a regional accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) are deemed to have satisfied both the general education and graduation competency requirements for an AA/AS degree. Degrees from accredited institutions outside of the US will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
This table is for students who have completed general education (GE) courses for an AA or AS degree before Fall 2025 and plan to maintain their catalog rights to use SCC’s old GE pattern for their AA or AS degree. Students can use courses from the new GE areas (second column) to fulfill the corresponding old GE requirements (first column).
For example, if you need to complete a course from area IIb on the old GE pattern (first column), you can use the new GE pattern and take a course from either L1B or L2 (second column) to meet the IIb requirement.

The potential for infectious disease exposure in the clinical setting in the RN Program includes many diseases. Proof of COVID vaccines and booster(s) and other vaccines are required via medical record documentation and are submitted after acceptance to the program.
The Registered Nursing Program accepts approved medical or religious exemptions for the COVID vaccines only and must be processed by the Los Rios Community College District, via the nursing program. Per all of our clinical facility policies, all other vaccines are required and do not have exemptions. Supporting documentation from a licensed MD, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician’s Assistant will be submitted. For any student with an approved exemption, masking (N95 or regular medical grade masks) policies will be required in the clinical setting per the facility’s policies.
