Academic Probation and Dismissal

Academic Probation: A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units and whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 is placed on Academic Probation 1. If you are on Academic Probation for a consecutive semester, you will be on Academic Probation 2.

Progress Probation: A student who has enrolled in at least 12 semester units is placed on Progress Probation 1 when W, I, and NP grades are recorded in one half or more of all units in which a student has enrolled. If you are on Progress Probation for a consecutive semester, you will be on Progress Probation 2.

Return to Good Standing: 

• A student placed on Academic Probation will return to Good Standing when the cumulative GPA has improved to a 2.0.
• A student placed on Progress Probation will return to Good Standing when the cumulative units of W, I, or NP are less than 50% of the total units attempted.

A student on Academic or Progress Probation for three consecutive semesters will go into Dismissal and will be required to sit out the following semester.

The student may then reapply for readmission, and is required to:

• Meet with a counselor
• Submit a  Petition for Readmission (PDF) form at least 10 days prior to the new semester.
• Achieve a 2.0 GPA or better and complete at least half of attempted units, or be placed on Dismissal again.

Students who are placed on Probation 1 will have a registration hold placed on their account. To remove your hold call (916) 558-2390 or come to the Student Services Front Counter.

Students who are placed on Probation 2 or Dismissal will lose priority as a continuing student and will register during open enrollment (later than priority 1 and 2). Students may lose their California College Promise Grant eligibility and may not qualify for financial aid.

Students who have a term GPA of 2.0 and have completed more than half the attempted units for the term will be able to appeal their loss of priority or California College Promise Grant.
