How Online Tutoring Works

Online tutoring works just like face-to-face tutoring.

Using Zoom and Google Docs through your Los Rios Gmail, you can meet with a tutor in real time. Just like any appointment in the Writing Center, tutors can help at any stage of the writing process for any class at the West Sacramento Center or at Sacramento City College.

Online Tutoring Hours

  • Monday to Thursday:
    9:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Friday:
    9:00 am to 3:00 pm

  • Saturday:
    9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Students can schedule appointments with us in the following ways:

Required Equipment

In order to access online tutoring, you will need:

Most newer laptops have both built-in webcams and microphones, and most detachable webcams for desktop computers have built-in microphones. If you don’t have either of these devices, they can be purchased individually at major retailers for a relatively inexpensive price.

Making an Appointment

Students can schedule appointments with us in the following ways:

Or, you may scroll down and complete the form at the bottom of this page.

We will need the following information when you make your appointment:

  • What assignment are you working on?
  • When is it due?

Preparing for Your Appointment

Upload Your Documents to Google Drive

  2. Click “NEW” to upload a new document from your computer’s files.
  3. Then, click “File upload,” and select the file you want to share with your tutor.

Share Your Documents with a Tutor

  1. In your list of uploaded documents in “Drive,” right-click on the document you wish to share.
  2. Select “Open With.”
  3. Select “Google Docs.”
  4. When the document opens, click on the blue “Share” button at the top right-hand corner of the screen. A box will open that says “Share with others.”

The Day of the Appointment

  1. Five minutes before your appointment, open the confirmation email you received from the Writing Center Gmail (westsacwritingcenter@gmail.com).
  2. Click on the Zoom link you were sent in the confirmation email to start your appointment.
  3. You may be prompted to briefly wait in a Zoom waiting room while your tutor prepares for your appointment.
  4. While you wait, please open and share all of the documents that you will want to go over with your tutor.

Staff

Faculty Coordinator Dana Armstrong

Dana ArmstrongMy name is  Dana Armstrong, and I am the faculty coordinator of the West Sacramento Writing Center.  My education began at Modesto Junior College where I took advantage of several work and study abroad programs. I eventually transferred to U.C. Berkeley where I studied Comparative Literature.  After graduating, I lived in Mexico for five months, studying Spanish and traveling around the country.  I earned my graduate degree from U.C. Davis and have also taken Composition courses at San Francisco State University.  I began my teaching career at Chabot College in Hayward and now have been teaching at Sacramento City College for nearly twenty years. In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family, swimming, and walking my dog, Dewey.

Instructional Assistant Mikenna Sims

Mikenna SimsHello! My name is  Mikenna Sims . I recently graduated from California State University, Long Beach with my Bachelor’s degree in English Education. I now attend Sac State and am pursuing a Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a certificate in Teaching Composition. After completing my graduate coursework, I hope to work as an ESL writing instructor at a California community college. When I’m not in class or tutoring at the WSC Writing Center, I like to spend my time gardening, reading, and taking my dog on hikes. If you have any questions—about writing or college-life in general— please do not hesitate to ask!

Instructional Assistant Nick Stockman

Nick StockmanHi! My name is Nick Stockman. I graduated from UC Davis in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in English. For the past four years, I have been substitute teaching in Placer County, working primarily in elementary and middle schools. I now attend Sac State, where I am working towards a Master’s degree in Creative Writing and a certificate in Teaching Composition. I’m planning on pursuing a PhD in literature afterwards, which will enable me––hopefully!––to teach English at the university level. When I’m not at school or tutoring at the WSC Writing Center, I’m usually at a coffeeshop reading, in the studio recording music, or at home watching movies. If you have any questions or simply want to talk (about writing, books, music, films, etc.), please feel free to drop in or email me.

Master Tutor Becky Reed

Hello there! My name is Becky Reed. I attended and ultimately received my B.S. in Business and Economics from California State University, Hayward. After working for almost 10 years as a Systems and HR Consultant, I decided to follow a personal passion and returned to school to receive a M.A. in English with a focus on literary theory and modern women’s literature from California State University, Sacramento. When I’m not at the WS Writing Center, I am either studying Spanish, sipping coffee with friends at a variety of local coffee houses, pouring wine at a foothill winery, and/or trekking through European countries by way of foot. If you have any questions or just want to chat, even if it’s just about pairing the best wine with your meal, please feel free to come visit me at the Writing Center!

Student Tutor Alex Diamant

Hello! My name is Alex Diamant. I am a current student at Sacramento City College majoring in English with plans to transfer Fall of 2021. I discovered the Writing Center in my ENGWR 300 course last Spring and came in for regular sessions prior to becoming a tutor. When I am not at school or the WSC Writing Center you can find me at the park playing ball with my little dog Zeus, biking through town, or running at the track. I am looking forward to a great semester in class and at the Writing Center!
