What You’ll Need
In order to access online tutoring, you will need a computer, microphone, and the Google Chrome or Firefox web browser. Webcam is optional.
Note: Most newer laptops have built-in webcams and microphones. Most detachable webcams (for desktop computers) have built-in microphones. Detachable webcams can be purchased at major retailers for about $20 to $50.
How It Works
- Schedule your appointment date and time with Tutoring and Learning Center by calling/texting (916) 573-0142 or emailing scc.lrc.tutor.desk@gmail.com.
- Receive your confirmation email and follow the instructions to get set up for the online tutoring session.
- At the time of the appointment, click on the link in the email to connect to your tutor.
Google or Firefox will ask you to authorize use of a microphone and webcam which you must accept to use the video chat feature. For any issues connecting, call/text (916) 573-0142 to talk to a Tutoring and Learning Center staff member.
The same support available to students in person is also available online! Tutors can assist students of any skill level and in any class/major as a resource for becoming more effective, confident and independent writers.

How It Works
Online tutoring for the Writing Center is available through the use of Google Hangouts and Google Docs. These are available to all students using their wID@apps.losrios.edu email address.
Step 1: Make An Appointment
Call (916) 558-2126 or email saccity.writingcenter@gmail.com and be prepared to provide the following information:
- What class do you need tutoring in?
- Who is your instructor?
- What assignment are you working on?
- When is it due?
Step 2: Before Your Appointment
Upload and Share Your Documents:
- Go to apps.losrios.edu and login using your W number (student ID number) and password
- Click “Google Drive”
- Click the button in upper-left that says “New” and select “File Upload”
- Choose the document in Word, PDF or JPG that you want to share with your tutor
- In your list of uploaded files, right-click the document you want to share with your tutor and select “Open With” then “Google Docs”
- When document opens, click the blue “Share” button at the top-right corner of the screen. A box will open that says “Share with others”
- Under “People,” type the tutor’s email address, which was provided to you when your appointment was confirmed
Step 3: Day of Appointment
- Five minutes before your appointment, log in at apps.losrios.edu using your W number and password
- Open all documents you have shared to review with your tutor
- Accept the invitation from your tutor to video chat
If this is your first video chat, Google will ask you to authorize use of microphone and webcam which you must accept to use the video chat feature. If you are using a browser other than Google Chrome, you may need to install a plug-in. Follow the directions on your screen.
Design and Digital Media and Engineering Design Technology students should see the Design Lab Online listed in their Canvas courses, no sign-up is required. Log in to chat and ask questions at any time. Lab staff will respond during the lab’s open hours.

NetTutor is an online tutoring service provided for free to SCC students.
If NetTutor is enabled for your class, it will be in the left-hand navigation on the Canvas page for your class.
If NetTutor is not enabled for your class, you can self-enroll in our Canvas shell for NetTutor. We recommend using a browser such as Chrome or Safari to enroll.
