Math/Stats Tutoring Lab

The Math/Stats Tutoring Lab is here to support and guide you when you need a boost in your math or stats class.

Beyond accessing tutoring online or in-person to help you, we also have a safe space for you to:

  • sit and study alone or with friends
  • get a tour of campus, or ask questions on navigating campus that we will either know or find somebody who does
  • warm up your lunch
  • have some coffee (we have a coffee maker we make a pot every morning)

You can also borrow math-related books to read and use the lab’s computers.

For those with basic food needs, we work to stock a donation-based supply for things like ramen and oatmeal. Access to this limited food pantry is for math/stats lab enrolled students only. We also work with our food pantry and CalFresh on Thursdays for things like oranges, carrots, apples, and bananas.

Some professors hold their office hours in the math/stats support lab, and we often have special events called “Math Jams” that will be advertised where you can really dive into your course to catch up or move ahead of the material in the class. Math Jams will alternate between:

  • Support classes such as the MathS courses and Stat 10
  • Math 333
  • Stats 300 and 480

We are inclusive of all students, and strive to have an intersectional perspective.

Enrolling in the Math/Stats Lab

The Math/Stats Lab is associated with a course called HSER1000 (section #15773).

We try to get all students taking math/stats that are registered as of the first week into this course automatically. If you are enrolled you will notice that “HSER 1000 Supervised Tutoring” is on your course schedule. You may also notice in your Canvas dashboard that there is an “SCC Sp23 HSER1000 LAB 15773 Boyd” or “ Math/Stats Support for Students: Spring '23” panel that appears.  This Canvas course is your portal to get help, and offers useful resources and information.

If you don’t see this course on your schedule but wish to get tutoring, go to eServices and add course section 15773 to your schedule. There is no permission number necessary. If you have difficulty with this step, please send us a note or drop in and we can assist.  We can also walk you through this whole process if you come to the physical location of the lab: Rodda Hall South RHS-162.

This is not a course like you normally take–it’s a lab that you drop into for help when needed. There are no assignments, but we help you with perhaps the assignments you have in your math/stats courses. In this lab, you can work independently or in groups, or hang out as you wait for a ride. It’s a space for our students.

The drop-in tutoring process is easy:

  • clock in when you arrive
  • clock out when you leave.

For online appointments, the Penji app controls the sessions.
