PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Program

What is PAL?

• PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) employs peer students as PAL Leaders for specific classes. These students are recommended by the instructor and have successfully completed the class or a higher-level class with an “A” or “B” grade.
• PAL Leaders facilitate group learning activities with students from the class. Activities will focus on collaborations among groups of students in applying and learning concepts presented in each class, and could include handouts, practice problems, games, etc.
• PAL sessions are different from tutoring in that homework is not being covered or tutored. Students needing this type of assistance should seek a tutor in one of SCC’s tutoring centers.

Program Highlights

PAL:

• is based on the supplemental instruction (SI) model
• provides a consistent schedule of group sessions
• promotes student collaborations in learning course concepts through activities that complement concepts
• requires frequent interaction and dialogue between instructor and PAL Leader
• utilizes a PAL Leader who has successfully completed the class or a higher-level class with an A or B grade and is recommended by the instructor
• Leaders receive continued training
• program is offered fall and spring semesters
