The Vocational Nursing (VN) program is a full-time, three-semester program approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). Instruction is provided four days a week, with varying times for theory and clinical. Graduates receive a Certificate of Achievement (COA) and may earn an Associate in Science Degree (AS) if additional course requirements are met. Graduates of the program may go on to take the BVNPT licensure exam.

Required Prerequisite Courses

Prerequisites required to apply to the VN program must be completed with a grade “C” or better and appear on your transcript (in-progress courses not accepted). A minimum 3.0 GPA in the sciences and a minimum combined 2.5 GPA is required for acceptance.

Transcript and Course Equivalency

Submit transcripts for all coursework taken outside of the Los Rios Community Colleges (American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake, and Sacramento City colleges) to the Admissions and Records Office.

Check your classes on the PDF DownloadVN Course Equivalency Chart (PDF) to determine if courses taken at other colleges will count toward prerequisites.

If you don’t see your course from another institution on the Equivalency Course Chart, but believe it should be counted, complete a Course Substitution Petition and be sure to give yourself at least two weeks for processing.

TEAS Testing Requirements

The TEAS exam must be completed prior to applying to the program and may be taken at any ATI testing site.

  • Only the latest edition of the TEAS exam will be accepted.
  • Visit to locate TEAS testing locations, dates and study guides.

No minimum score required for the VN program. Testing provides diagnostic information for individual support.

Steps to Apply

  1. Apply to Sacramento City College.
  2. Attend an information session.
  3. Provide official college transcripts for any college outside of the Los Rios Community College District (American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake or Sacramento City Colleges) to the Admissions and Records Office to be placed on your record prior to applying to the program.
  4. Complete a Course Substitution Petition for any classes taken outside the Los Rios Community College District and not included on the PDF DownloadVN Course Equivalency Chart (PDF), and submit to the Admissions and Records Office.
  5. Review the VN application instructions and application documents before completing the application.
  6. Complete the online application and upload all supporting documents in PDF format.

Student Selection Process

Once the application acceptance period ends, all applications are evaluated, and multi-criteria scores confirmed. Applicants will be selected at random and once 40 qualified applicants and 10 alternates have been selected, the evaluation process ends.

Selected applicants will be emailed at the address provided on the application within eight weeks of the close of the acceptance period. Only selected applicants will be contacted.

Qualification is based on the following criteria:

  • Submission of a complete application.
  • Completion of all program prerequisites.

If not selected:

  • You will not be contacted and telephone verification is not provided.
  • SCC does not maintain a waitlist for nursing.
  • All submitted materials will be destroyed - SCC does not retain your application.
  • A new, complete application must be submitted for any future application periods.

What To Do If Your Application Is Accepted

If accepted, students will receive instructions for completing enrollment requirements.

  • Drug screen
  • Background check
  • CPR certification for healthcare providers
  • Health screening

Apply to Nursing in eServices

Once inside eServices:

  1. Log into eServices with your student ID and password
  2. Click on “Other Resources”
  3. Click the "Nursing Programs" in the left Column
  4. Click on the "Nursing Program Application" button
  5. Select one of the Nursing Program to enroll

The next nursing application enrollment is open February 1, 2021 — February 28, 2021.

There is one open application period in the spring semester for the following fall and spring semesters, therefore both Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 cohorts will be selected during this period.
