The Integration Bee is the annual event hosted by the math department. It is similar to the spelling bee, but with integrals, an important concept in calculus. Students who are enrolled in at least one unit at Sacramento City College can compete. Everyone is welcome to come to cheer for our competitors!

Eligibility
To participate in the SCC Integration Bee you need to be enrolled in at least one unit at Sacramento City College. Please plan on showing your class schedule on day of event.
Rules
Qualifying Round
- No electronic devices, notes, or printed materials will be allowed during the competition.
- The second page shows all of the qualifying problems for the Integration Bee and has spaces for you to write your answers.
- You’ll have 20 minutes to do these problems.
- Do not do scratch work on the answer page. Do not write anything on the answer page except your name and your answers.
- All your scratch work should be done on the scratch paper. Keep it organized and clearly labeled, and turn it all in.
- There is no partial credit. Exception: If we need to break ties to get an appropriate number of contestants, we’ll check your scratch work and may award fractional points. We will only look for scratch work on problems that you answered incorrectly. If you leave a question blank, we will not look at the scratch work for that problem.
- The problems are presented in terms of x. Your answers must be in terms of x.
- You do not need to include “+C” in your answers.
- You do not need to include absolute value bars around arguments of log functions. (That is to say, “ln x ” and “ln|x| ” are equally acceptable.)
- Answers must be in closed form (no series solutions).
Spectators
- During competition (while contestants are evaluating integrals), all spectators should maintain silence to avoid distracting the competitors.
- Applause is welcome at the end of each round.
- Conversations among spectators between rounds of competition is encouraged.
Competitive Rounds
- No electronic devices, notes, or printed materials will be allowed during the competition.
- Qualifying students will compete in groups of up to 4.
- Groups not participating in the current match will be sequestered outside the room. During sequestration, cell phone use (or any other form of communication that would give contestants an advanced look at competition problems) is not allowed.
- All contestants will be given the same integrals in each round.
- Each contestant will be allowed one “miss” during the competition. Upon the second miss-evaluation of an integral, the contestant will be eliminated.
- If all of the contestants miss the same integral during a round, it will not be considered as a “miss” for the contestants.
- As contestants are eliminated, the judges will reconstitute groups of the surviving contestants.
- There is no need to include “+C” in answers.
- Absolute value bars around arguments of log functions will not be required. (That is to say, “lnx” and “ln|x|” are equally acceptable.)
- Answers must be in closed form (no series solutions).
- The judges will have full discretion as to what integrals will be issued throughout the contest, and as to the correctness of answers.
- A contestant may indicate they are finished with an integral by turning away from the board to face the judges. At that point, their answer is final and may not be revised.
- An official timekeeper will determine the amount of time allotted for each integral. The time for each integral will be announced, and a one-minute warning will be given. If all contestants signal that they are finished before the time is up, then the judges may stop the time. The judges have the discretion to extend the announced time, but not to shorten it.
- All of the contestants who make it to the competitive rounds will receive a t-shirt. The last five contestants surviving elimination will be awarded additional prizes. A speed round will be made to break any ties among the top five.
