Course description:

Storytelling is a verbal art that can be learned. Storytelling is an especially useful tool for teachers and assistants in preschool years and beyond. Picture Yourself:
  1. Developing stories.
  2. Giving children an opportunity to hear and retell tales of wisdom and goodness.
  3. Introducing books of quality that might otherwise be missed by beginning or reluctant readers.
  4. Increasing childrens' vocabulary and sense of story structure.
  5. Offering a listening experience of value to students of English as a Second Language.
  6. Producing programs of student storytellers (grades one and higher)
  7. Producing Holiday and special event programming
  8. Discovering your own ethnic heritage of tales.

Course objectives:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
  1. Describe the goals and reasons for using storytelling in education.
  2. Select and tell six stories from traditional folklore.
  3. Prepare and tell one original story.
  4. Select and direct one group story
  5. Demonstrate the qualities of an expressive listener.
