PILOT Web Research Tutorial
Live Online Workshops
The librarians offer various types of library orientations that
target the diverse needs and busy schedules of SCC faculty and students:
1. Customized orientations are tailored to your pre-determined
assignment or course objective. You choose the topic and the date of the
orientation. Instructors attend these hands-on sessions with their classes
during the regular class meeting time. The orientations cover either
searching for books, e-books and journal/newspaper articles using the online
Research Databases or best practices searching the Internet. They are
normally held in the LR220 classroom.
2. The Face-to-Face Workshops are offered throughout the semester,
including evenings, and Saturdays. Students attend these on their own
time. They must sign up in advance for these 50-minute sessions
at the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the library. The workshops are
held in LR 220.
Proof of Completion:
Students will receive a "Proof of Completion" slip after successfully completing a face-to-face session
and the accompanying quiz.
3. PILOT is a self-paced interactive
tutorial that teaches information literacy skills. It contains six
modules. Each module is designed to take less than 60 minutes from
registration through the final quiz. Actual time spent on each module
will vary depending on students' familiarity with the topics. It's
available 24/7 and is free for all students.
Proof of Completion: Each module in PILOT contains a self-grading quiz at the end. Your students can send their quiz results to your email. Please remind your students that they need to register at the beginning of PILOT to be able to email you their quiz results. Since students are allowed to take the quizzes multiple times, we recommend that students be required to pass the PILOT quizzes with a score of at least 85% or better.
4.The Web Research Tutorial covers best practices for doing research using free resources on the World Wide Web. Students will learn to evaluate Web sources, search Google more effectively, analyze URLs, and make use of academically-oriented Website discovery tools. The tutorial is available via the Web. Students can work at their own pace, but should expect to spend about one hour going through the tutorial, not including the quiz.
Proof of Completion: Instructors have two options: have students print out a quiz and bring it to the reference desk at the LRC, or import a quiz into their D2L course site. Please see the tutorial's faculty page for more information.![]()
5. The Live Online Workshops are 90-minute, live, hands-on, online classes. The sessions are held in a webinar-style virtual classroom that students may access the workshop from home or anywhere with a reliable Internet connection. Students will learn to find articles in subscription research databases such as Ebsco Academic Search Premier, CQ Researcher and Ebsco Newspaper Source (similar to a face-to-face session "B"). Some advanced search techniques will be covered as well. If you have questions, please contact Jeff Karlsen.
Proof of Completion: Students will complete an exercise following the session; instructors will be notified of successful completion via e-mail.
