Bookmarklets
~ 3. November 2009 ~
Turns out bookmarklets are very easy to make, esp. if you use an online generator such as the bookmarklets tool. I made one for searching e-books:
LOIS E-Book Search
Just drag it up to your browser’s bookmarks/links toolbar to try it.
[edit months later: bah, turns out this only works in Firefox!!! Not IE or Chrome. oh well.]
I’m not sure there’s much point though in producing and offering a bunch of bookmarklets, or for that matter opensearch plugins, which are similarly easy to make—better to go whole hog with a toolbar, e.g. LibX or Conduit. Conduit is very slick. Maybe too slick? I wonder what information they’re collecting.
A couple arbitrary links here:
- Aaron Tay’s description of bookmarklet/opensearch/etc. pros and cons (he discusses similar topics frequently)
- A Library Journal article on browser toolbars
