Students studying philosophy at Sacramento City College have a variety of goals. Many are planning to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, while others are learning how to apply philosophical thinking in various aspects of their lives. The philosophy courses introduce students to major philosophers and philosophical issues and provide logical and critical thinking skills for dealing with problems. We emphasize critical thinking and rational analysis, the study of ethical and moral issues, surveys of  major religions and their influences on culture and history. We offer honors courses in the history of  classical Greek and medieval philosophy, and in early modern philosophy from Descartes to Kant.

Philosophy offers guidelines for logical and critical reasoning in everyday life, as well as a review of personal, social and moral issues. Theories of knowledge and metaphysics are reviewed, as well as aesthetic, moral and religious values. Included in the reviews are the beliefs and philosophical concepts of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zen, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Various other philosophical topics are covered, including the nature of law, justice and punishment . For students planning to transfer to universities or those just wanting to learn more about philosophy, SCC is the place to begin.
