Sacramento City College – Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy

Federal regulations require SCC Financial Aid Office to uniformly measure a student’s satisfactory academic progress using a Qualitative and Quantitative standard toward an SCC eligible degree, certificate, or transfer program.  A student’s entire academic history is evaluated to determine his or her financial aid academic progress, even if the student was not a prior financial aid recipient.  Financial Aid calculations may differ from the calculations with Admissions and Records.

FINANCIAL AID SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS STANDARDS

Qualitative Standard is the measurement of a student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA).  SCC requires a student to maintain a minimum of an SCC 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Quantitative Standard has two measurements:

1.       The 150% Maximum Time Frame Measurement.   Students are allowed a maximum amount of units attempted to finish their program.  Students enrolled in an SCC degree, transfer, or two-year certificate program will reach their 150% maximum time frame with 90 units attempted.  The maximum time frame for a certificate program of less than two-years is calculated by multiplying 150% by the number of units in the program requirement.

For example: The Office Administration Certificate is a 30-unit program requirement.  The 30-unit program requirement is multiplied by 150%. Students meet the maximum time frame when they reach 45 total units attempted.

Equation: 30 units (program requirement) x 1.50 (maximum time frame) = 45 (total units attempted)

How to count total units attempted.   Add all units with an: A, B, C, D, F, CR, NC, I, W, RD, IP, Blank (grade not reported), Repeated Courses, Academic Renewal, and Leaves.  Exclude units from the first two semesters with leaves and any Military withdrawals [MW].  Degrees, certificates and any units accepted by the SCC Admissions and Records Office and will be counted toward total units attempted.

2.       The Cumulative Progress Percentage Measurement is the percentage of credit hours the student has not completed successfully. The cumulative progress percentage must be 25% or less. (See the examples below).

 FINANCIAL AID ACADEMIC STANDINGS

SCC Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and Standings are determined after each semester.

1.       Good Standing: A student who has a cumulative 2.0 GPA and 25% or less cumulative progress percentage.  A student who has a completed degree, two-year certificate or has reached their 150% maximum time frame will not qualify for this academic standing.

2.       Academic Probation: A student who has not maintained both a cumulative 2.0 GPA and 25% or less cumulative progress percentage. Students may receive financial aid while on Academic Probation, but they must complete 75% of their coursework with passing grades and achieve a 2.0 GPA each term that they are on Academic Probation in order to continue financial aid eligibility. Students who reach a cumulative 2.0 GPA and lower their cumulative progress percentage to 25% or less will be placed in good standing.

3.       Progress Probation:  A student who has reached their 150% maximum time frame towards their educational program or has completed a degree, transfer or two-year certificate program. A student on progress probation must maintain both a 2.0 GPA and a 25% or less progress percentage each semester for continued financial aid eligibility.  Failure to have a successful semester will result in the dismissal of financial aid.

4.       Dismissal Status:  A student who has not maintained the qualitative and quantitative standards for the semester while on Academic or Progress Probation or has reached their maximum time-frame. Students in dismissal status are not eligible for financial aid.

Note:  If you are in Dismissal Status, you may complete a Financial Aid Petition for extenuating circumstances that have affected your financial aid academic progress. The petition form is available on the SCC Financial Aid Website or at the Financial Aid Office.  An updated SCC counselor approved educational planner MUST be attached with the petition form. Visit the Counseling Services for your educational planner or call (916) 558-2204.  Supporting documents are strongly recommended upon submission.

Petition for Reinstatement: Any student who accepted financial aid funds, then completely withdrew (including withdrawals without notation) or received all F’s and/or W’s grades, will be required to petition for reinstatement for future financial aid eligibility.

SCC Cumulative Progress Percentage Calculation

(must be 25% or less to meet SCC Financial Aid Academic Progress)

Step 1.

Count all your SCC Non-Passing Units (exclude units with discounted grades)

Step 2.

Find your SCC Earned Grade Total at the end of the transcript, under SCC Career Totals

Step 3.

Determine your Progress Percentage Unit Total:

By adding Step 1: SCC Non-Passing Units plus Step 2. Earned Grade Total

Step 4.

Calculate your SCC Cumulative Progress Percentage:

By dividing Step 1: SCC Non-Passing Units by Step 3. Progress Percentage Unit Total.
