Dental Hygienists are licensed dental health professionals who work under the supervision of a dentist. Their duties include obtaining and recording medical/dental histories; removing deposits and stains from teeth (cleanings); recording the conditions of the oral tissues & teeth; taking x-rays; dental health education; administration of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide; and soft tissue curettage.
The dental hygiene program is a 2-year program, requiring the successful completion of 11 prerequisite courses before an applicant is eligible to apply. Graduates are eligible to take all national and state exams necessary to be able to practice in the United States. Graduates receive an Associate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene.
