Course Description: This course introduces the students to the microcomputer operating system. The student will become familiar with basic features, file and program management, disk management commands, and menus. This course may be taken three times for credit for different operating systems.

What you need to take this course:

1.    Textbook: Microsoft Windows XP Illustrated Complete, Johnson Course Technology Publishing ISBN: 0619147245 NOTE: It will not be possible to complete this course without the text book.

2.    You must have access to a computer with Microsoft Windows XP installed. Using an earlier/later version of Microsoft Windows will cause a number of problems for you. If you do not own a computer, the computer labs on campus will be open during this semester, you will need to check on the hours they are available. http://busdiv.scc.losrios.edu/strelab.html   Tutors are also available in the SCC computer lab.

3.      You must have access to a computer with Internet access. You will need Internet access in

order to view and turn in assignments.

In this course we will be using a course management tool called Moodle :   The

http://www.someprofs.org web site will be where you will take online quizzes, obtain copies of

assignments, a copy of the course outline, etc.  The course uses a weekly format to make it

simple to see what readings, and assignments are due.  There is a Calendar, and Upcoming

Events  block that shows the due dates.  The course materials are only  accessible online by

logging in to using your student identification number without using a “W” is required.  If you do not

own a computer with Internet access, the computer labs on campus will be open during this

semester.  Here is a link to the SCC Computer lab that shows times, and days it is available:

           http://busdiv.scc.losrios.edu/stre_lab.html

5.    You must have a working e-mail account.  If not already done, activate your Los Rios iMail account you should already have one assigned, and will need it for this course. This is free to currently enrolled students at SCC.  You will receive user information to log into the course in your imail account.  To activate your imail account go here: https://imail.losrios.edu/  you can have your Imail account forward email to your current email account.  To do this click on Preferences located on the left-hand side of the screen, then click on Forwarding your Imail to set this up.

      Please note:

o    Because of e-mail viruses, Prof. Anderson does not accept e-mail from unknown sources. Therefore, all e-mail messages must include the subject CISA 305 and your full name typed in the message, or the e-mail may be ignored. Example: CISA 305 Jill Jones.

o    It’s impossible for Prof. Anderson to be familiar with every e-mail software application on the market, so please don’t ask for technical assistance.

6.    You must check your e-mail account regularly throughout the course, I recommend checking your email a minimum of four times each week. Official announcements will be made by e-mail or on the News Forum page on the course web site at http://www.someprofs.org/moodle

7.    All assignments must be typed, and you are responsible for saving all assignments correctly.  All work will be submitted through the course website.  It is your responsibility to ensure that I can open the files you send.  Your work must be compatible with Microsoft Office 2003 applications.   The SCC computer lab has computers with Office 2003 available on them for information about the computer lab schedule can be found by clicking on this link:   http://busdiv.scc.losrios.edu/strelab.html  There are also tutors available in the B151 Computer Lab.  If you would prefer not to spend any money, you can download the OpenOffice Suite for free at: http://www.openoffice.org/  OpenOffice is 99%+ compatible with all MS Office applications, and best of all,  it’s FREE. You will have to make sure that you save the document you submit as a Word document.

8.    Supplies:  USB drive, a small one should be adequate to save a copy of most lab assignments.  I recommend that you save at least two copies of your work.

To connect to the Moodle web site you will need to use a web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox.  The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the web site is: http://www.someprofs.org

Assignments:  Assignment information will be posted on the Somprofs.org Website. This course is not a self-paced course and each assignment has a particular due date to turn be submitted.  You may work ahead and post questions and answers to the discussion boards.  Assignments will not be graded until after the due date. Always keep a copy of all work.

Due Date Policy for Assignments and Exams: All homework, labs, quizzes and exams are due on or before their due date. Assignments turned in late for any reason will not be accepted for credit and will receive a zero.  Always keep a copy of all work.

We will be doing Lab Assignments that will need to be uploaded to the online course website.  After you submit an assignment through the link you should see “File uploaded Successfully”, if you don’t see that message upload the file again.  I have posted information about how to make sure your assignment uploads successfully on the course website

Checking Grades: It is your responsibility to check your grades, by checking the online grade book, and notify the instructor if an assignment you submitted has not been graded.  All grades will normally be posted in the grade book area in Moodle within 4 days after the due date for the assignment.  If you submitted an assignment but do not see your grade posted within that time, please contact me immediately via E-mail. If you do not contact me within 1 week of the assignment due date to let me know there is a problem with a grade on an assignment the current grade in the grade book will not be changed.

Time Commitment: Assignments usually take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours on the computer, plus required reading. Students who are experienced with a Windows PC may finish faster; however those who are at a "beginning" level may need more time to complete the assignment.

Forums:  Students will have the opportunity to earn extra credit points by submitting questions and answering questions through the forums.  Each student may only answer two questions posted on the forum, and may only submit two questions that are not posted already in the discussion board for a maximum of 4 points per forum.  In other words if there a question about how to show bold print do not ask the same question about how to show bold print or give the same answer as another student.  In order to get the highest grade it is recommended that you participate.  To receive credit for the questions/answers you submit to the forum, these must be posted by 12:00pm Noon on the due date for each assignment.

How to reach me:  Within the course website, a good place to ask, and answer general questions is in the Forums.  I encourage you all to help each other and earn extra credit by answering and asking questions that may arise.  Chances are that many of you will be working on assignments at the same time.  I will monitor the Forums and provide feedback as needed. For more specific questions, such as those related to your grade or enrollment status, etc. you may email me.  Although every effort is made to reply to students' questions as promptly as possible, there is no guarantee regarding the length of time that it may take me to answer student E-mails. I usually check my email Monday – Friday a few times between the hours of 9:00am – 4:00pm, excluding holidays.  Although it would be unusual there may be some times where I may need to change the times I will be answering emails. I will let the class know of any changes.  If you email me, remember to put CISC 320 and your name in the subject line of your email so that I can identify it quickly.  Example CISC 320 Jill Jones

Since generally I may not be checking my email or discussion Forums after 4:00pm on Fridays, I recommend starting assignments early so that you will have time to ask questions.

Learning Accommodations:  If you are a student with a learning disability, a physical disability, or other special needs, please let me know as soon as possible if you need special accommodations.   All needs that have been verified through the disability centers on campus will be accommodated.

Student Code of Conduct

Academic Honesty Policy:  Students are required to do their own work on assignments and to work alone on exams.  Examples, and the consequences, of cheating are given below.  Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct in the Sacramento City College Student Guide for additional examples and information.

Examples of Cheating:

         Obtaining answers from another student during an exam (in any form and with or without his/her

            knowledge).

         Providing answers to another student during an exam (in any form).

         Using material during an exam that is not allowed.

         Copying of quiz or exam questions.

         Submitting work that is not your own.

Consequences of Cheating

If cheating is identified, all individuals involved will receive zero points for the assignment/quiz/exam.    All students involved in cheating will receive a grade of zero on any work in which cheating occurs.  The matter will be referred to the Business Division Dean and Campus Discipline Officer for appropriate action.

Student Conduct

Students are required to conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful and professional manner when communicating with other students, lab personnel, instructional aides, and professors. This includes all E-mail communications.

Any flagrant violations of any of these standards of conduct will result in the student being referred to the Department Dean and/or the Dean of Students for disciplinary action which could include being asked to leave the course.

Class Drop Policy: Neither the instructor's signature nor approval is required to drop a class. Students should drop themselves "officially" through the online registration system, or they may receive an "F" in the class.  Although the instructor may drop students for not submitting work and/or participating, DO NOT assume that the instructor will automatically drop you off the class roster. It is the student's sole responsibility to officially drop classes.

Changes to Syllabus: The instructor reserves the right to make adjustments in the operation of this course that are warranted to better meet the needs of the students and the objectives of the course.  I will inform the class of any changes.

The final grade in this class will be based on the following
