SGVT 300 Introduction to Student Government

This course is an introduction to the dynamics of working groups. It provides theory and practice in leadership, parliamentary procedure, committee techniques, and organizational behavior. The emphasis is on governmental procedures and functions as these apply to student leadership. Students can anticipate participation in the student association and related committees.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • define his or her role and function in small working groups.
  • assess critically the workings of a student association.
  • operate effectively in small groups.
  • describe the necessary skills for effective student representation as part of the participatory decision making process.
  • incorporate basic leadership skills into his or her life.
  • analyze group dynamics and organizational behavior as these relate to student leadership.

SGVT 311 Student Leadership I

  • Prerequisite:SGVT 300 with a grade of "C" or better

This course is the first in a four-part series on leadership. It provides theory and practice in leadership, parliamentary procedure, committee techniques, and organizational behavior. The emphasis is on team building and group dynamics as these apply to student leadership. Students will be participating in the student association and related committees. Meets the training requirements of the Student Associated Council and is open to all students who have met the prerequisite.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate the necessary skills for effective student representation as part of the participatory decision making process.
  • appraise effective leadership of small groups.
  • plan the workings of a student association.
  • prioritize basic leadership skills into other aspects of their life.
